I crave silence and solitude, but it may reduce me to selfish desire. To fulfill the two greatest commandments, “To love God and my neighbor as myself” requires a relationship with my neighbor. In purest devotion, many of the Desert Fathers lived as hermits but in clusters in order to fulfill these commandments. Could it be the greatest sin of the West is not materialism after all, rather isolationism?
When I read the title, I thought GREAT. Bonnie is giving me license to be a misanthrop! You let me down! Instead you convicted me and I can’t fantasize about holing myself up in isolation; not that I would have been able to but at least the thought was nice!
