Who are the Mystics?

There is some discussion about Mother Theresa and her “dark night of the soul,” or the last half of her life until her death when she experienced no “feeling” of the presence of God.

‘A Horse with No Name’

When Wayne and I saw a popular cult-classic film on tv recently starring Bruce Willis and a host of others, we heehawed when Bruce Willis said, “Hey, I’m American. Our names don’t mean squat.” His foreign girlfriend was trying to wring some meaning out of who he was.

Dare to Live in Irony

When I teach creative writing to beginners, I emphasize three things: the need for strong action verbs, the importance of simile and metaphor, and the power of irony. Some say the best writers are those who use irony to craft the illustration and application of their story.

Indigo Peaks

The ridge of mountains from my window looks like an indigo piece of construction paper, cut with jagged peaks and valleys, and glued to a light blue sheet of construction paper. Right now the way the sun is hitting the panorama, the ridge looks flat, surreal.

Sizzling

Then, I eagerly anticipated the first hint of a season change and the chill of autumn. One day comes that divides summer from fall.

Just a Skype Away

Loaf is the pan your mother baked bread in, and it is what your friend did on Saturday afternoon while you washed your dad’s car.

Earring Connection

Over a decade ago, Wayne, Julia, and I sold, stored or packed our worldly belongings. We boarded a plane for a new adventure–a new life in Odessa, Ukraine. Communism had just fallen. Our vision was broad, our hopes high, and our experience nill.

Fading Fragment

The Colorado sunset this evening captivated us as it melted scarlet into the silver horizon. As we watched the last streaks of pink fade, dark clouds gathered. It began to rain. The moment was ethereal.
