Long-time White House correspondent, Helen Thomas was asked last Friday concerning her opinion of Israel. Her response was that the Jews should “get the hell out of Palestine.” The whole thing was videoed. She advocated sending the Jews back to Poland or Germany…
Press secretary Ari Fleischer calls for her resignation: “She should lose her job over this,” Fleischer said in an email. “As someone who is Jewish, and as someone who worked with her and used to like her, I find this appalling.”
Thomas’s statement on the surface shows her ignorance of history and especially documented Jewish history. In the Weekly Standard, Charles Krauthammer wrote,
“Israel is the very embodiment of Jewish continuity: It is the only nation on earth that inhabits the same land, bears the same name, speaks the same language, and worships the same God that it did 3,000 years ago. You dig the soil and you find pottery from Davidic times, coins from Bar Kokhba, and 2,000-year-old scrolls written in a script remarkably like the one that today advertises ice cream at the corner candy store.”
Here is a very brief history of Israel and the Jewish people. Worth the read.
On a deeper level, Thomas’s statement reveals a heart of bigotry. Why does the American media elite tolerate this view, spoken publicly? I believe in the freedom of press, but not the freedom of xenophobic remarks. What if Thomas had called for all blacks to return to Africa or Chinese to China or Indians to India or Arabs to Saudi? Can you imagine the outrage?
Thomas essentially requested ethnic cleansing. I don’t want Helen Thomas “unbiasedly” reporting the news… do you?
