Keeping Vigil: Update on Dad

Dear friends, family, and pastors have streamed through the intensive care unit these past few days. They have brought us strength, hope, and comfort–especially mom. We are so grateful for all of you who are praying and encouraging us in small and big ways. Dad had another bad episode last evening. In fact, the…

New on Dad

Soon Dad will be moved from intensive care to a regular private room. He will be taken off all monitors as well as some of his meds. His color is good, and he is peaceful, breathing well. Dad remains in a dream-like state, lingering between life and death, but he is less restless and more calm…

Update on Dad

My husband spent the night in the intensive care unit with dad while mom and my sister-in-law went home to catch some sleep. Dad slept through the night, but he had another bad spell again at 5 AM with difficulty breathing. He needed deep suctioning. He is resting peacefully now. There is no change other than…

Taking Refuge

For those of you looking for a recent update on dad, please read my last post below, “Dad’s Last Hour.” We were summoned to the hospital this morning for what we thought to be Dad’s last moments. Before we got there, he had rallied somewhat and stabilized. Then after a time of family consultation and prayer, we…

Dad’s ‘Last Hour’

‘The Music of His Feet’: More Thoughts on Dad

Cats are stealth. They creep around the house without a sound and sneak up on you–without warning. For some reason, our old Siamese cat, “Promise”–whom we buried in Budapest, Hungary, a few years ago–could be heard walking across the kitchen floor, if you had ears to hear it. It was the kind of soft padding…

Update on Dad

Wayne just phoned from the hospital to give the report of the most recent brain scan. It seems that the bleeding in the brain has stopped. One doctor felt that Dad responded this morning slightly when he asked him to put “thumbs up!” Yesterday, he was completely non-responsive–not in a coma–rather a restless, dreamlike state….

First Glow of Hanukkah

We lit the first candles of Hanukkah: the Shamash or the servant candle and the first candle of the eight nights.   Then we played a game. The white-haired man in the middle lost the game. He lost really bad. Notice how unhappy he looks! He doesn’t like to lose. Nope not at all.  Neither…

Sweet Memories Linger…

Family and friends gathered around 1:30 PM. We ate about an hour later. I can’t take credit for the incredible meal. Everyone brought two or three dishes. It delivered. One unique thing I served this year was both smoked and herbed turkey, old fashioned cornbread dressing and smoked oyster dressing. These were a nice twist…
